What these numbers are, and what they are definitely not.

Last updated: 12 October 2026

Read this first. Every figure on NameCrestly is a statistical estimate produced by a model. None of it is a count of real, identified people, and none of it can tell you anything about a specific individual.

Estimates carry real error

Figures are derived by combining two separate public datasets using probability. They are useful for the scale of an answer and unreliable for precision. If the site reports 4,200 people, the honest interpretation is “a few thousand”. The error is proportionally largest for rare names, where two small and uncertain probabilities are multiplied together.

Not a people search

NameCrestly holds no information about individuals. It cannot tell you who shares your name, where they live, or anything else about them, and it must not be used to attempt to identify, locate or contact anyone. Our datasets describe populations in aggregate and contain no personal records of any kind.

Not professional advice

Nothing here is legal, genealogical, medical, financial or professional advice. Do not rely on it for official filings, legal proceedings, identity verification, ancestry research conclusions or any decision with real consequences.

United States only

Both source datasets are US-only. Every figure should be read as applying within the United States. A name widely used elsewhere may show a small US figure, which says nothing about its use in other countries.

Known gaps

  • People who immigrated as adults are not in the first-name data.
  • Surname counts are from the 2010 census, rescaled to today.
  • Very small counts are suppressed at source for privacy, so some real names are absent entirely.
  • The model treats first and last names as independent, which systematically understates culturally consistent pairings.

These are explained in full on the methodology page.

Zodiac and novelty content

Zodiac signs, generational labels and similar features are included for entertainment. They are traditional or conventional categories, not scientific claims, and no predictive meaning should be taken from them.

Name meanings

Etymologies are drawn from mainstream reference scholarship and are often contested or reconstructed. Where a derivation is uncertain we say so. Treat them as the common scholarly reading rather than settled fact.

Notable people

Lists of well-known people are curated for name recognition only. Their inclusion is not an endorsement, and no connection to any site visitor is implied.

Relationship to other sites

NameCrestly is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Social Security Administration, the US Census Bureau, any government agency, or any other name-statistics website.
