Rare name generator
Every name here is real and appears in US birth records — these are not invented. Filter by letter and rarity, then draw a fresh set.
Real names, not invented ones
Most name generators assemble plausible-looking syllables. This one does the opposite: it draws from the roughly forty thousand first names that actually appear in US birth records, filtered down to those carried by very few people. Everything you see here has been given to a real American child, which means it will not look strange on a form, and it has a pronunciation people can arrive at.
Why the threshold is adjustable
Rarity is a spectrum and the right point on it is personal. Under 3,000 people nationally still means a name most Americans have encountered. Under 100 means a name that will need spelling out every time. The filter lets you decide which side of that trade you want before you fall in love with something.
Check before you commit
Every result links through to the full lookup, which is worth doing. A name that is rare overall may have a strong regional concentration, a sharply skewed age profile, or a gender split that has flipped in the last twenty years — all things worth knowing before the name goes on a birth certificate.
Questions about this tool
Are these names made up?
No. Every name is drawn from Social Security birth records, so each has been given to at least a handful of American children.
Why do I get different names each time?
The draw is random from everything matching your filters, which is usually thousands of names. Press the button again for a fresh twelve.
Can I filter by gender?
Not on this page, because very rare names often have too little data for a reliable split. Click through to any name to see its gender breakdown.
